Wiig repeats Men’s Slope in Aspen Wiig repeats, while Kevin Pearce and a disappointed but gracious Shaun White round out the podium. Should come as no surprise that Wiig was number one; the course was moved and made up primarily of jumps. Only one real rail feature; a gateway box as the top hit. The course was super tech in the sense the jumps came up fast. Any errors, any scrubbed speed meant your run was toast, and a lot of runs were toast. Also apparent was the lack of Travis Rice and Danny Kass, whom both failed to make the finals. MFM dropped out. So some new bucks got into the final which always good to see. It must say that Lonnie Kauk almost made the finals, qualifying 13th he is gonna get in there next year and stomp some ass. There was a shit ton of falls or scrubbed jumps and things seemed not so metal but on the other the back to back airs meant things were way fucking metal. It was all about consistency or they were done no making up for lost speed.
The format was best run of two, so you know no pressure to make anything. Going through the first set of runs it went like this. Mikkel Bang landed some cool stuff but scrubbed the last jump. Jussi bailed on his first run. Wiig nailed a 270 on, 180 off the cannon, cab 9, back 9, switch back 9 and a front 10 and moved right into first place. A position he would hold till the end. Eero Ettela did a front flip off the cannon and a double flip off the final big money booter and ended up in 4th place overall. Mathieu Crepel had it going up top but scrubbed a cab nine on the last jump. Chas did a 1260 on the last jump, that combined with style moved him into 3rd on the first run. Mason Aguirre took big chance and had a solid run but scrubbed something towards the end, I think a back 10. Kevin Pearce nailed his first run with a front 10 in the middle of his run and a fakie to fakie cab 10 and other stuff to move into second. Shaun rode a fucking broken board in his first run and still killed it; 270 on, 9’s in all directions and a front 10 to end it, on a broken board. Shaun moved into third and the crowd wanted him to place higher.
My notes for the second run read like this, Chas, Aguirre, Pearce, and most bailing or at least not moving around the rankings at all. The big surprise of the second group of runs was Heikki Sorsa unstrapping his back fit mid run and doing a rad one footed three on the 68’ final booter. That moved him into 5th (he deserved higher) but he was happy with his run. Shaun made his second too on a different board but did not move out of 3rd. Shaun said his second board was too fast, he was not used to it. So there you have Andreas Wiig cruised to victory with his first run.
