Winter Games NZ On Track
Winter Games NZ delegates’ visit declared a success
Lake Wanaka, New Zealand – Last week’s visit by Pacific Rim national representatives to the Southern Lakes region as been declared a resounding success by Winter Games NZ organizers.
The four-day visit by seven delegates from six countries (Australia, China, Korea, USA, Canada and Japan) was designed to showcase the best of New Zealand’s winter sports facilities, combined with the visitor appeal of the Queenstown/Lake Wanaka region. The resulting approval from the delegates, all representatives of their country’s Olympic Committees, seals the future of the inaugural Winter Games NZ next winter.
“The visit by the Pacific Rim delegates has exceeded our expectations and we see it as a very positive step towards a successful Winter Games NZ next year,” said Arthur Klap, Winter Games NZ CEO. “Our prime objective was to establish confidence with the delegates that we have the venues, the infrastructure and the organisation to host such a major winter sports festival. We are confident that we achieved that.”
Minister of Tourism, Damian O’Connor gave Government endorsement and support for the event during the official Mayoral Welcome in Queenstown. “I have every confidence the organisers will deliver a world class event and ensure those who come to the Winter Games, their expectations will be met and even surpassed.”
As well as impressing on delegates the quality of the event organization and professional standards being applied, Winter Games NZ also illustrated how training and competing in Otago in 2009 would be a positive part of athletes’ build up for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
With buy-in from media partners soon to be confirmed, Winter Games NZ promises to raise the profile of winter sports to both the New Zealand and international viewing public. Sports such as snowboarding, free skiing and adaptive snow sports will enjoy never before seen exposure with all the spin-off benefits for athletes.
Winter Games NZ will take place at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Naseby and Dunedin from August 28 to September 6 next year and will feature disciplines of alpine skiing, free skiing, x-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating and adaptive snow sports.
