Thredbo: A Solid Session from the Snow Fairy

New South Wales, Australia - Did someone say winter? That is definitely what it has felt like in Thredbo over the last few days. For the second time this month, the resort has been blanketed in fresh snow with over 20 centimetres falling Sunday afternoon, continuing overnight and into Monday.

All the winter woollies were dusted off with temperatures at the top of Thredbo dipping to a very chilly –7 degrees and only managing to tip a high of –4, recording the coldest April day in 30 years. The cold snap didn’t deter the hardy village visitors who headed up the chairlift to build snowmen, throw snowballs and to make their first snow angels of the season

Could this be a sign of a bumper 2008 season? Well the ones in the know are forecasting big things this winter, with solid consistent snowfalls expected.

James Luffman, weatherzone.com.au meteorologist commented on the season ahead, "The seasonal forecast indicates we can expect plenty more of these snow-bearing systems through the coming winter. The forecast is based on statistical relationships between the state of the atmosphere and ocean in autumn, and the resulting snow depths through the season."

So break out the boards, shake off the gear and get ready to ride with the official opening on June 7, now only 39 sleeps away. Thredbo will be celebrating in true alpine style with a white themed winter weekend full of music, movies, fun, festivities and skiing and boarding (weather permitting of course).

Thredbo’s snowmaking system has undergone another AU$1.5 million upgrade, and will be giving Mother Nature a helping hand… whether she needs it or not! The largest snowmaking system in the Southern Hemisphere now boasts 155 snow guns covering 65 hectares of snow riding territory for all standards.
