Stoken at Nashoba Valley in Massachusetts
There were heavy doubts as to whether or not Stoken at Nashoba in Westford Massachusetts was going to go down this past weekend. Mike Sweeney, the head of parks had called the Rome crew the night before letting them know that with the anticipated rain storm, the mountain would probably be shut down for the day… and with that, the rest of the season.
Stoken is always a blast so the Rome crew decided to get down there and make it happen regardless, if the mountain was closed, everyone was down to hike anyway.
Luckily, at 8am out the window instead of rain, we had snow falling like crazy. And once again Stoken turned out to be one of the most fun events of the season. There was a ton of shredders, who were stoked on just getting together snowboarding and having fun. The first feature was a couple boxes to get down on, some pretty impressive one footer front boards were being thrown down. From there we all went down to the “junk pile” brought to us by Awesome snowboard clothing. This was a “feature” that included 2 rails, an irrigation pipe, rainbow rail, a wallride and 3 K-mart style plastic jumps. As ghetto as it sounds, it was a ton of fun, and really showed how much the Mass crew loved to snowboard. Last but not least we had the ever popular….medium air contest. There was really only 1 rule. No spins past a 180. There were pretty much the raddest of grabs being thrown out. The no footers were rad to watch, and awesomely dangerous as you can see Stevie Joyce’s deck coming off the lip of the jump like a javelin.
In the end it broke down with Ben Pond grabbing third and a new pair of gloves and a new Rome bag, Mike Ravelson bringing home some new bindings and Steve Joyce grabbing first with a new Rome board. Oh yeah, and some kid back flipped into the pond off of the diving board in full shred gear for some bindings as well, definitely deserving an honorable mention.
A huge thanks to Mike Sweeney and his Nashoba crew for having us and all the hard work that goes into everything.
