Mt Bachelor Opens More Mountain
Mt Bachelor Offers 160 Additional Acres by Connecting Catchlines
Bend, OR – Mt Bachelor announces the connection of the backside catchlines offering return access from the southeast bowls which were previously out of bounds. The east and west catchlines are trails that form ski area boundaries on the south side of the mountain off the Summit lift. These two trails have now been joined at a spot on the southeast side of the mountain called the “East West Divide.”
The divide is located at 7640’ on a ridge just Northeast of Tot Butte. At the Divide, riders choose to return to the east or west side of the mountain. From the Divide, a 2.4 mile ride on the trail heading east brings you to the Sunrise lift, or a 3.1 mile ride to the west delivers you to Northwest lift. The ski area boundary is now marked at this trail. The new section adds nearly 160 additional acres of accessible terrain off the southeast side and allows riders to access an additional 800’ of vertical that was previously below the old east catch line.
“It’s the first time ever we have corduroy around the world! The new groomed trail made it possible to open the 160 acres of wide open rolling bowl terrain,” says Grooming Manager Ryan Gage. Gage performed the trail connection in Mt Bachelor’s brand new BR350 Prinoth cat, the most hi-tech, powerful and operator-friendly grooming machine on the market.
The route design was conceived by Mt Bachelor’s Avalanche Safety Supervisor John (Moose) Millslagle. “We just made the mountain a whole lot bigger. Besides offering a lot more vertical drop below the Cow’s Face area, this will open up more spring corn skiing.
The terrain is made up of steep bowls of expert terrain separated by treed and lava ridges. Skiers and riders should be sure to ride with a partner in these areas and to inquire about the conditions from the Summit patrol before going there.
