March in Stowe – Winter at Its Peak
Stowe, VT - Stowe Mountain Resort receives an impressive 333” average inches of snowfall each winter. Last year that number crept up to over 375 inches and this season has already seen a near record for snowfall in December with totals up to twenty feet. Just in case you’re keeping score, that’s on par with most western ski resorts. Another little known fact is that March is typically the snowiest month of the year on Mt. Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont’s highest peak.
Snowfall in northern Vermont tends to arrive in one of two styles. One style is via a spectacular Nor'easter or Alberta Clipper storm which always attracts a good deal of attention from meteorologists around the region. The former is marked by a tendency to stall over a region and release prodigious quantities of moisture in the form of snow over a 24-36 hour period. The Clippers are fast moving storms moving in from the plains of Canada, picking up moisture from the Great Lakes and releasing it over the mountains of Northern Vermont. The other more prevalent way in which snow falls in Stowe is through a series of small local snow squalls which may not even reach down into the village. It is common to pick up 4-6” one day, perhaps 2-3” the next, and then an inch or two more. If you aren’t on the hill you may not even know it snowed and word does not always spread throughout cities to the south of us.
Deep snow-pack, moderating temperatures and frequent fresh snowfall is the template for mountain conditions every March in Stowe. Couple that with fewer people on the mountain and a calendar of fun late-season events and you’ll find the ideal time and place this winter to ski and ride. Event’s this March include; the ‘Billabong Flaunt It’ all girls slopestyle jam, the ‘Gritty Nitty,’ a non-profit pro-level snowboard contest dedicated to environmental awareness, the ‘Cliff House Summit Series’ dinners and Stowe’s ‘Spring Summit Celebration’ part one.
