Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Enjoys Record Breaking Season
Teton Village, Wyo - Record snowfall of 605 inches helped Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) experience its most successful season ever, with over 480,000 skier visits.
“From the beginning of the season, snow fell continuously on the Tetons” said Jerry Blann, President. “Back to back storm cycles throughout December resulted in exceptional snow conditions on our entire mountain, and deep powder days will remain a vivid memory to many guests during the holidays. Our business volumes, like the snowfall, grew every month continuing to set new records as well.”
January was our second best snow month in over 40 years and March, with 150 inches, broke all records. With the continued accumulation and consistent temperatures, we experienced bottomless powder until the last day of the season. “The guests who took advantage of our early and late season value pricing definitely got their money’s worth this season,” added Blann.
JHMR business volumes also proved to be at record levels, with over 19% growth from last season and 5.5% over the previous high skier visit mark in 2005-2006. Every month of the season JHMR experienced strong skier visits that surpassed previous years.
“Besides the exceptional snowfall this season, this success reflects the 12 years of capital investment the Kemmerer’s have spent to improve the base area and the on-mountain facilities including the very popular Bridger Restaurants at the summit of the Gondola, that opened this winter. To be able to accomplish this in the highly competitive ski industry is something we are very proud of,” stated Blann.
“We are in our second season of Tram construction and had planned for the potential impact of guests waiting one more year to return to Jackson Hole. As such, to come out in record numbers gives us a great momentum going into the exciting, but costly times ahead.” stated Blann. “We are grateful to local skiers and snowboarders for their continued support, even prior to knowing about the snow, we sold a record number of season passes this year.” Blann added. The addition of increased air service through the efforts of JH AIR allowed for more access into the valley throughout the season.
Construction of the new Aerial Tram is progressing on schedule for a December 2008 opening. Crews from Garaventa have arrived, along with the first shipments of Tram materials from Europe. Tower 1 installation, and mountain road clearance commenced on April 7th in addition to the continued construction schedule in place on the Lower Terminal. The new Aerial Tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will be twice the size of the original, carrying 100 passengers, have modern, sleek cabins, a visually inspiring base terminal, and will be faster and more efficient than its predecessor.
This summer, Teton Village will offer an expanded selection of activities. In addition to hiking, sightseeing from the Gondola, mountain biking and tandem paragliding, there will be a Via Ferrata installed. Located at the summit of the Bridger Gondola, this is a hiking system that uses permanent iron rungs placed into the exposed rock to allow hikers to scale faces that would be impossible without climbing equipment. Very popular in Europe (due to the history of the creation of these routes in WWI), today Ferratas have emerged into a sport of their own. The Via Ferrata allows a variety of skill levels, from expert climbers to the most novice guest, to experience the joy of climbing in the mountains. JHMR will introduce a practice route and first routes by July.
The Bridger Gondola will operate May 25 – October 12, 2008. Season Passholders will be able to ride the Gondola for free all summer. At the summit, Couloir already recognized by Food and Wine Magazine as the place to eat (February 2008 issue) will serve lunch daily, and dinners on the weekends and Headwall Deli and Pizza will be open daily. The Bridger Center, at the base of the gondola, will serve as the Guest Activity and Service Center, including Café 6311, shopping and equipment rentals. The popular climbing wall and bungee jumping trampoline will return to the base area to round out a summer destination filled with fun activities.
