CADS Festival – March 10th to 14th, 2008 Sun Peaks, BC – For the first time, Sun Peaks Resort will be hosting the annual Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) Ski Improvement & Race Development Festival from March 10 to 14, 2008.
Disabled skiers and snowboarders from across the country will be attending this fun-filled week at Sun Peaks Resort. This year’s event theme is ‘The Convention on the Rights of the Child’ with support from Heritage Canada. Spirit of BC and 2010 Legacies Now are also sponsoring this week long festival. Events include ski and snowboard improvement lessons, instructor training, recreational fun races for the whole family, as well as special activities on and off the slopes.
The CADS Festival is an annual event held at a different venue each year, to give members and their families the opportunity to ski in a new place, improve their technique and enjoy a mini-holiday!
Grass roots skiers and snowboarders will also get a chance to watch and participate in the Canadian Para-Alpine Championships happening the same week as the CADS Festival. Organized by Alpine Canada Alpin and the Sun Peaks Alpine Club, this event allows up-and-coming divisional racers to participate at an international level. Participants will be competing to qualify for the World Cup circuit and many athletes present will be competing as 2010 hopefuls. Para-alpine IPC World Cup globe winners Lauren Woolstencroft (Vancouver, BC/Calgary, AB) and Chris Williamson (Markham, ON) will both be on the slopes for this spectacular event.
Also tied in with the CADS Festival at Sun Peaks is ‘Carving the Future,” taking place March 14th and 15th. Alpine Canada Alpin will host Para-Alpine clinics and help disabled skiers and snowboarders get comfortable with their equipment and learn basics of racing on-snow, among other activities.
Skiing for the disabled has been available at Sun Peaks through the Adaptive Sports Program (ASSP) for a number of years. ASSP has been recruiting and training volunteers with advanced skiing skills to assist with and teach disabled skiers at Sun Peaks Resort.

About CADS
CADS is a national organization with eleven Divisions, one for each province and one for the National Capital area. Our roots go back to 1976 when the then Ski School Director at Sunshine Village, Jerry Johnston, took on the task of amalgamating the various organizations that were teaching persons with a disability to ski. Three years later the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing was granted corporate status as a not-for-profit under Part II of the CANADA CORPORATION ACT. Jerry, now retired, is a member of the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame and received the Order of Canada for his work on behalf of persons with a disability.
