Big White's "Magnificent 7s" Ski, Snowboard, and Wakeboard Contest Closes Out Successful Season!
Kelowna, BC - With snowflakes softly falling in the dusky evening skies, 21 of the Okanagan Valley's top athletes in skiing, snowboarding, and wakeboarding competed in the first ever "Magnificent 7s" slopestyle competition at Big White Ski Resort on Saturday night.
The Sun Rype Adventure Park at Happy Valley was the venue for the evening's entertainment. Without doubt a major highlight for the estimated crowd of 1500 spectators was seeing the wakeboarders towed across a special man-made pool and performing slopestyle tricks on an elevated flat-rail. Instead of a boat, a 2008 Jeep was used to tow the riders to the rail! DJ beats echoes across the hillside, and the assembled throng was buzzing with excitement!
Taking home a nice, fat cheque of $1500 each for their Slopestyle efforts were Cameron Schuster (Skiing), Alex Murovec (Snowboarding), and Chris Canuel (Wakeboarding).
The Magnificent 7s was just one highlight in a weekend that featured a Dummy Downhill, the Ski and Board Shop Slopestyle Battle Royale (won by Olympia Sports in Vernon), and the 3rd Annual Photo and Video Festival. To make the finals in the Magnificent 7s, skiers and snowboarders competed at Big White's TELUS Park earlier in the day. qualified earlier in the day. Though he didn't make the finals, Brad Watson won a brand-new 2008 Rossignol Mini snowboard for impressing the judges with his tricks.
On Sunday, Mother Nature sent the season out on a high note with a coating of fresh 'champagne powder' all day Sunday, and skiers and riders were rewarded by some of the best conditions of the year.
Sponsors for the Spring Fling included Dockside Marine Centre, Jeep, Nintendo, Okanagan Spring Brewery, Rossignol, Snowshoe Sam's, Sun-Rype, Telus and The Village Rider.
