2007-2008 Volcom PBRJ: Martock Results

The 2007/08 North American Peanut Butter & Rail Jam tour made it through treacherous stop #13 without a single slaughtering or demented serial killer in sight!

This weekend we found ourselves in Nova Scotia, which is just about as far East as you can go in North America without taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean (little cold right now). Nova Scotia means “New Scotland” and is has enough cool things to do and see to keep you busy for quite a while! Of course, no visit to the Canadian Maritimes would be complete without a little sightseeing at Peggy’s Cove. Located about an hour Southwest of the Province’s capital of Halifax, Peggy’s Cove is a tiny fishing village right on the coast that seems as if time has forgotten it. While the old, brightly coloured houses and lobster fishing ships are all groovy; the main attraction of any visit to Peggy’s Cover has got to be the ancient lighthouse. It stands on the rocks just a few feet from the water and has guided ships in the area for centuries.

Also high on our list of reason’s for visiting Nova Scotia was to throw down Volcom’s first Peanut Butter & Rail Jam at Martock “Mountain”. While none of the runs would likely strike fear into the heart of a ripper, it is what Andy MacLean and the fine people at Martock do with their terrain that is impressive! A mid-season’s visit to the mountain would find the place packed with jumps, rails, boxes and a superpipe! With hometown heroes like Trevor Andrew, Sara Conrad and Alice Duckworth, Martock knows how to breed world-class rippers!

As luck would have it, Sunday brought clear blue skies and Spring temperatures for the PBRJ! As is traditionally the case, the 15 & Under riders kicked things off with a session to remember! There was plenty of your standard 50-50s, but also some more impressive tricks like back tailslides, front boards and boardslides. All in all, the 15 & Under Division killed it and got the day charging in the right direction. After the final numbers were tallied, it was Simon Corriveau claiming 1st, Cole Parsons in 2nd and Alex Barker a close 3rd!

The amazing Spring weather continued to do it’s thing and had the snow softened up perfectly for the 16 & Over Division. Many of these guys had traveled over 24 hours just to ride in the PBRJ so didn’t hesitate to break out their bangers! Huge 270 front boards to the down on the flat-down box, nollie back-noses on the down-rail and 5-0 to front board, 270-out on the up box to down mailbox feature had everyone breaking out champagne and cigars! After carefully punching the scores into our onsite super computer, Jordan Newcombe took home 1st, Stephen Vassallo 2nd and James Bessette 3rd. It was close!

The ladies were up next and put on a show that had the spectators and fellow-competitors-alike getting behind them! What was almost as impressive was their height (or lack thereof)! Liam Ellicott, Leroy Seymour and myself (Jeff Arnold), can’t recall seeing so many tiny rippers in one division! Nevertheless, all the girls killed it and their showed us you don’t need to see overtop of the rails to slay them! After all was said and done, it was Dallas Rourke placing 1st, Sarah Payzant in 2nd and Stephanie Meagher in 3rd!

With the girls Division wrapped up, that meant there was only one thing left to do…watch the Open Division terrors destroy everything in site! It was clear from the get-go that these guys were taking no prisoners! Some seriously impressive hammers were thrown down on all three PBRJ features! B/s 180 tail-press to 360-out, f/s 270 front board to 270 out and a switch nollie backlip are just a few tricks that were thrown down. Check the video to see the magic in motion! After the final seconds ticked away, Andnrew Armstrong slid into 1st, Pat Arsenault took 2nd and Jeff Dawe was hot on their heels in 3rd! What a day!

We’d like to give a huge thanks to Andy MacLean and the rest of the great people at Martock for all their stone support! For a small resort, these guys have big hearts and worked hard to make sure everyone had a good time! Thanks also to our judges Dawson Hood, Jeremy Page and Craig Crocker, Christina Campbell for tabulating and Courtney Spencer from Pro Girls for helping us pull things together for the event. If you didn’t get a chance to make it out to the Martock PBRJ this year, hopefully you won’t make that mistake twice!
