2007-2008 International Volcom PBRJ: Madonna Di Campiglio Results
by JP
Sunday the 16th of March was the kick-off for the 2008 version of Volcom's Peanut Butter and Rail Jam event, this time in the scenic village of Madonna Di Campiglio, high up in the Italian Dolomites.
Somehow, surprisingly, a dark, negative and stomry low-pressure descended upon the normally oh-so sunny village of Madonna exactly on the day of our event, making it hard for the organizers to decide whether to go on as planned or cancel, as banners, tents and even rails were all over the place in the gusting wind and the visibility was as clear as in a certain place where the sun never shines.
But, when eventually 20 riders made the trek up to the Ursus Snow park on top of the mountain, we decided to go on as planned.
At times, riders missed the take-off and the rails entirely, due to the dense fog, but luckily nobody got hurt and we even saw some hammer tricks go down... Due to the weather and the 20 riders only, we ran 3 heats only, and in the end, the results were:
15 and under
1st: Cees Wille - Holland
2nd: Marco Grigis - Italy
3rd: Filippo Maquignaz - Italy (Volcom Family rider)
16 and over
1st: Ramiro Musacchio - Italy
2nd: Camporelli Guido - Italy
3rd: Buzzi Enrico - Italy
Girls
1st: Marta Negri - Italy
2nd: Vigano Cristina - Italy
3rd: Aline Schönegger - Austria
Best trick: Ramiro Musacchio: Switch fs board 180 out on the wave rail..
Spirits stayed high trough out the day, as the nearest espresso machine was only a 30 metre walk from the snow park... For 1 euro only you could score the shortest, most intensely aromatic and firestarting espresso in all of Europe, and this at the altitude of 2600 metres above sea level... And we did, repeatedly...
So if you find yourself in Italy and the weather doesn't cooperate, do not despair... You are never far away from a restaurant that will serve you the most mouth-watering Strangolapreti al gorgonzola you'll ever experience. I could go on name dropping Italian food forever, but, knowing that it would get censored from this story, I won't. Oh, and the BBQ sausages on the hill were all time too.
Next morning, it was of course sunny again.
Grazie per tutto, Madonna di Campiglio, we see you again next year!
