2007-2008 International Volcom PBRJ: La Molina Results
Catalunya, Spain - It was a long time since a PBRJ was organized in the Pyrenees, and that Saturday was actually the first one in La Molina, Cataluna. This winter has not been generous with snow in general all around Europe, but the shapers from the snowpark are doing a good job by providing really fun and rippable terrain all winter long.
Around 85 contestants from all over Spain and even from the French side of the mountains signed up at the contest, ready to deal with the 3 obstacles prepared for us. Set up consisted of one box, one “San Francisco” (up-flat-down) and two Picnic tables.
We were blessed with clear blue sky, a little bit of fresh snow and a beautiful landscape…that was the scene of a massive rail assault that afternoon.
Rails were kind of easy but really fun, perfect to try plenty different combos…We started with the 15 and under category at the same time that the BBQ was fired and all those young rippers were fuelled by an excellent Butifarada (local sausage), actually the best sausage in Europe according to some bon vivants… Soon some of them stood out from the others and at this comp, Alex Sapera took the 3rd place by spinning some nice half cab ins to fs boardslide, Eduard Barniol finished with the 2nd place and Oriol Fargas was on fire, gapping what he could and entering the rails with nice Fs 270’s.
There were about 20 girls who signed in and they weren’t scared neither by the bleeding body parts scattered in the snow; neither by the rails. Talk about level, the youngest girl was Paulita, 8 years old, that was trying some boardslide to fs boardslide on the picnic tables. It is needless to say that her older friends were quite good and actually impressed the judges and the best guys. It is good to see that many girls pushing each other and riding that good. Good job ladies! By the way, Beth Climet was the more consistent and landed smoothly technical tricks all day until taking the first place and an invitation to the European PBRJ champs. In the 16 and over category the fight was tight in between the finalists and those rails have probably witnessed more tricks that day than during the whole season… Local rider from “Les Angles” Radjee Rauch was impressive pulling supersmooth nollie bs tailslides but missed the top 3 by a close margin…Juan Polanco was one of the “San Francisco” master and took the 3rd place with an aggressive style, Luis Navas and Rafael Nunez - results were really tight but Rafael took the win with crazy combos everywhere and a really nice style…Can’t wait to see how the Pyreneans will compare with the other riders at the champs…
There were so many giveaways up for grabs at the end including snowboard jackets and backpacks that some kids couldn’t believe it…
Another great day at the mountain ended and we need to thank a lot of people for that: Monica from the resort “La Molina”, to Miquel and Hector and Snowpark Division for the rails and the perfect setup and shape, to Aneto for the caldo and Butifarrada, to Sales rep Txufo, Paco from Slider, to the Antidot team, to Gore for all the help, to Jon for filming, Fotoneu for the pics and Electric for helping out with prizes.
